Sherwood is the most built-out place we cover — a mature Pulaski County suburb of postwar through nineties homes, largely single-storey brick ranches and split-levels on settled lots, with newer development out at the edges.

The canopy is the whole story

The thing that separates Sherwood from a newer suburb is time. Trees planted when these neighbourhoods went in are now full-grown and arching over the streets, and the tree canopy in the established parts of town is genuinely heavy. It is the single most attractive thing about living there and the single biggest driver of exterior cleaning work.
Under that much cover a roof can spend most of the day in shadow. Black streaking on shingle shows up earlier and heavier here than it does out in the open subdivisions, and because so many of the houses are single-storey with wide low roof planes, a streaked roof is highly visible from the street rather than hidden by pitch.
Brick ranches also hide their problem better than vinyl does. Growth on brick reads as general darkening rather than obvious green, so it tends to be tolerated for years and then comes as a surprise when one elevation is cleaned and the difference against the next one is obvious.

My roof is streaked but the neighbour’s is not. Why?
Almost always tree cover and aspect. A slope that spends the day in shade holds moisture, and moisture is what the algae needs. It is not a difference in the shingle.
Does brick need cleaning as often as vinyl?
It needs it as often. It just shows it later. Growth on brick darkens rather than greening, so it is easy to miss until a clean patch gives you something to compare against.
Do you take work this far from Conway?
Yes. Sherwood is a regular run, usually paired with Cabot.
